Pathology Lab Campaign

Pathology Lab to Stay in NHS in Dorchester

- Wessex FM on 8 October 2014 Campaigners in Dorset have been celebrating the decision by Dorset County Hospital's board not to transfer the hospital's pathology lab to a private provider.

Dorset Health Campaign have released the following statement : "We believe this is the right decision for the people of Dorset and for the long term future of the hospital. Pathology is at the centre of a well functioning hospital. We were particularly worried about the long term impact of the lab being passed over to a private provider, not just because of the distance it might have involved but because of the potential risk in quality and of increase in costs which have often occurred with past privatisation. We would like to thank the 12,000 people who signed our petition, many of whom have also agreed to sign the pledge to write to their MP to protest about the privatisation of the NHS. This is one small battle won but we still need to be vigilant because winning one battle is not winning the war, and there will be other services under threat in the future."

From next week, supporters of the Dorset Health Campaign will be out knocking on doors asking people locally to support our petition to save the Pathology Lab at Dorset County Hospital. DHC spokesman Andy Stillman added: “While we welcome the extra time to allow more people to be involved in the decision making process, at the end of the day we still see this privatisation as being against both the best interests and wishes of the people who use the health services of Dorset. “No argument has yet been shared with the public to justify such a risky change.” More than 7,000 people have now signed a petition supporting the DCH’s efforts to keep the pathology laboratory in Dorchester.

PLAYING THE PART - Members of the Dorset Health Campaign teamed up with volunteers and supporters from the West Dorset Unite Community Group and took to Bridport’s streets once again to encourage residents to sign a petition to save the Pathology Lab at Dorset County Hospital. But this time, the group performed a satirical play for the public, with characters representing the NHS, private companies, the ‘concerned citizen’ and the media, showing the audience the effect privatisation could have on the lab.

- Dorset Echo on 30 July 2014 CAMPAIGNERS fighting for the future of Dorset County Hospital’s pathology laboratory have welcomed a delay in a decision on the future of the service.

Dorset County Hospital’s trust board has now delayed a decision on the future of the laboratory until October, which will give the Dorset Health Scrutiny Committee a chance to make comments on the issue. The trust board meeting when a decision was due to be made on to whom the contract should be awarded was scheduled for the same day as the next Health Scrutiny Committee meeting on September 10, which would have given the committee no chance to comment.

BBC Radio Solent: Wednesday 18th June

Sally Cooke from our team was interviewed after early morning news on Radio Solent. Sally expressed our detailed concerns about the Dorchester Hospital's plans to sell off the Pathology Lab. Sally was followed an hour later by the chief executive of the hospital who sought to justify the actions of the hospital board. She failed miserably when it came to explaining why there were so many problems in 2012 when as chief executive at the Bedford Hospital, she presided over the privatisation of the pathology labaratory. Her answer was "I phoned Bedford last week; they have no problems now".
